Some details about the PlayStation 4 operating system are published on vgleaks.com.  The console runs on Orbis OS based on FreeBSD 9.0. Presumably AMD and Sony worked together to build a video driver for Orbis OS, partly because there were no catalyst drivers for the BSD operating system.

Marc Diana senior product marketing manager at AMD says only PlayStation 4 uses the hUMA technology. The use of unified memory access can provide a significant performance advantage compared to the Xbox One. hUMA allows the CPU and GPU to use the same memory in the apu at the same time. In traditional systems the memory of the cpu and the gpu are separated. This information was later dismissed by AMD.

During a recent Gamescom 2013 interview, an AMD spokesperson made inaccurate statements regarding the details of our semi-custom APU architectures. AMD will not comment on the Microsoft Xbox One and Sony PS4 memory architectures and will not speak for Microsoft, Sony or other AMD customers.

A “hacker” that used the alias Reckz0r claims that a vulnerability was detected in Orbis OS. According to him it is relatively easy to crack the console. In the description of the method a file must be placed on a USB stick. Then the console must be started in safe mode in order to activate the exploit, after this the software could run without the normally required digital signature making homebrew possible. This of course was a big fat scam and more information can be found on Wololo.net
