[PS4 Hack – Homebrew/Exploit]
Hacker group fail0verflow has released source files for running a Linux Kernel on the PlayStation 4. Linux can be executed on the console by using a vulnerability in the WebKit on firmware 1.76. The vulnerability is patched in newer firmware versions. The files to their PS4 fork of the Linux Kernel are shared via GitHub. The necessary jailbreak to allow the exploiting of the firmware is not in the code. Fail0verflow claims to work only on the Linux Kernel patches and is not planning on releasing exploits.

Out of the box features are: timers, irq’s, serial ports, ethernet in 1GB per second mode, the hdmi encoder, WiFi, Bluetooth. Still a lot needs to be done, audio via HDMI is not functioning and USB support is missing.

[PS4 Hack – Homebrew/Exploit]
Hacker kR105 has released a functional dlclose exploit which makes it possible to run self-made code on a PlayStation 4 with firmware 1.76 and provided the necessary files to run Linux on the console. The exploit was already known for some time, but turned out to be very unstable. This seems to be solved by kR105. In order to start Linux without having to write a loader yourself he also provided an update for the 1.76 Playground. Lastly the hacker also provides a modified Linux distribution compatible with the console. (Source 1 / Source 2 / Source 3)

[PS4 Model Release]
Sony has officially announced the PlayStation Slim, a smaller version of the PlayStation 4. The console will be available from 16 September for a suggested retail price of 299 euro. Sony did not give information about the hardware.

Sony also announces the PlayStation 4 Pro a more powerful version of the console that was known under it’s codename Neo. Sony emphazises that the Pro will be released on the market next to the regular PlayStation 4. Both old and new (digital and physical) games are and will be compatible with both models in the future.

Developers can update existing games to make them run better or nicer. Sony calls this Forward Compatibility and according to the company there are six first party-games that get an update at launch. These include Infamous First Light and Uncharted 4. The extra computing power can also be used on full HD screens. The console will recognize which TV it is connected to and depending on it will run the game in a certain mode (higher frame rate, more graphic details).

According to a leaked document the Pro has eight Jaguar cores, that are clocked 1,3 times faster with a speed of 2,1Ghz. The GPU consists of 36 compute units at 911Mhz as where the original has 18 at 800Mhz. This means the available computing power has doubled! Like the PS4, the Pro uses 8GB gddr5 but it is clocked higher so the bandwidth is 218GB per second. (Source 1 / Source 2)
